Henry Erben built the organ in 1863 for the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Sts. Peter and Paul in Providence, RI, where it replaced an Erben instrument of the 1840s. In 1878, that building was demolished to make room for the present cathedral, also designed by Patrick C. Keely. It is possible that the organ was moved to the temporary or pro-cathedral on Broad Street, erected for use during the interim. -- 2005 OHS Handbook
