Barbara Owen was born in Utica, New York. She attended Westminster Choir College of Princeton, New Jersey, and Boston University of Boston, Massachusetts. She began her organ building career with the C.B. Fisk firm of Gloucester, Massachusetts, in 1961. She worked there until 1979 as a voicer and tuner.¹ During the 1990s she also was in an organ building consortium composed of Dana Hull of Ann Arbor, Michigan; Susan Tattershall of Staatsburg, New York, and Owen.² She was Music Director of the First Religious Society of Newburyport (1963-2002) and Librarian of the AGO Organ Library at Boston University (1985-2012).

Owens is an organist, organ consultant and historian, she is the author of several books dealing with the organ and its music. A former AGO regional councilor and dean of two chapters, she is past president of the Organ Historical Society and a trustee of Methuen Memorial Music Hall. She was honored by the Organ Historical Society with its Distinguished Service Award. She has resided in Newburyport, Massachusetts, since 1989.³
